Japanese barberry is an extremely hardy and attractive shrub that can become invasive, although the
one in my Iowa garden has not been problematic. The leaves have a purplish red sheen from spring to fall
with small yellow flowers in late spring. Although Japanese barberry can be propagated by root stem
cuttings, transplanting the original plant is not recommended. If you would like a shrub that tolerates
pollution and average to poor soils, Japanese barberry is the perfect choice.
