Canna is a lovely, exotic flower that is wonderfully easy to grow so long as it receives adequate moisture, even tolerating boggy conditions. The vivid colors and unusual shape of the 3-petaled flowers make canna ideal for late summer color in the garden, especially since the flowers will continue to bloom until frost. In Iowa, canna rhizomes must be dug up at the end of fall and brought inside to store until spring. Despite its frost-tender nature, canna's numerous assests endear the plant as a choice for the Iowa gardener.

Please note that the Zones listed above are USDA Hardiness Zones and are only given as a rough indication of whether a plant will grow and thrive in your area. Temperature variations and unusual weather conditions can affect plant survival. To assist plant survival during the winter, you may wish to place mulch over the areas in question or plant the flowers in an area away from walls or cement. Additionally, digging up bulbs and roots to overwinter indoors may be preferrable to keeping them in the ground.
